Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic injectable derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It provides a safe and effective way to treat dynamic wrinkles or wrinkles that occur due to repetitive facial expressions like smiling, squinting, and frowning.

Once Botox enters your body, it blocks nerve signals from reaching the muscles in your face. Over time, this allows your muscles to relax, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

What types of skin imperfections can Botox treat?

Botox is incredibly versatile. Carolina Vein Institute regularly uses it to address:

  • Wrinkles between the eyebrows
  • Wrinkles on the sides of the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Horizontal creases on the forehead
  • Lines at the corners of the mouth

You might also benefit from Botox injections if you have small indents or “cobblestones” on your chin.

What happens during a Botox appointment?

Your provider at Carolina Vein Institute administers Botox injections after physically examining your face and asking you about your goals for treatment. Then, they develop a custom plan and administer a series of injections. The number of injections you receive depends on the severity of your wrinkles and individual goals.

Following Botox injections, your provider gives you a list of recovery instructions. You should avoid sun exposure, alcohol, and strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is safe and generally well-tolerated, but it isn’t for everyone. This is particularly true if you have allergies or you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. In the days following your appointment, it’s normal to experience some mild swelling and bruising at each injection site. You can relieve the discomfort by applying an ice pack or taking over-the-counter pain medication.

Are the results of Botox permanent?

The results of Botox aren’t permanent, but they do last an average of four to six months. In addition, each time you receive Botox injections, your results could last longer

You know it’s time to schedule a follow-up appointment at Carolina Vein Institute once wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet begin reappearing on the surface of your face.

Are there other types of cosmetic injectables?

In addition to Botox, Carolina Vein Institute offers dermal fillers. Fillers are different from Botox in that they address lost facial volume. Fillers are a gel-like substance such as hyaluronic acid. Once these solutions enter your body, they restore lost volume, smooth lines, and soften creases. Dermal fillers can also enhance your facial contours.
