How to Prepare for Radiofrequency Ablation

How to Prepare for Radiofrequency Ablation

Varicose veins are large, painful veins that typically form in the legs. If you experience symptoms or are concerned about your appearance, we offer a variety of treatments at Carolina Vein Institute, including radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation.

Dr. Luan Tran and Dr. Rousu An, our experienced varicose vein and injection specialists, provide all the information you need to prepare effectively for these procedures. We answer your questions and share tips to help you eliminate varicose veins for good.

Prep before radiofrequency ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive technique we use to heat and destroy bothersome varicose veins. We make a small skin incision to insert the radiofrequency probe. Once you are numb, we deliver RF energy to heat the vein and collapse its walls.

Because this is a minimally invasive procedure done while you are awake, you do not need extensive preparation beforehand. However, we recommend the following tips to ensure your procedure goes smoothly:

We discuss what to expect at your pre-op appointment. If you have any questions, please ask us before your procedure.

What to do on the day of the procedure

On the day of your procedure, wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Bring someone with you to drive you home, as you may experience discomfort afterward.

Please wear high-cut underwear that you do not mind getting marked, as there may be some skin prep on them after the procedure. Bring magazines, music, or other entertainment to enjoy while you wait.

Avoid shaving your legs on the day of the procedure. The antiseptic wash will burn freshly shaved skin and open it up to infection from irritation.

Most patients have minimal discomfort after the procedure and usually require nothing more than over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine or Tylenol.

Preparing for the recovery phase

The recovery stage is the most important part of radiofrequency ablation. During this time, your body heals and bothersome veins collapse for long-term relief.

We discuss the recovery phase with you before the procedure so you can prepare. Preparation for recovery after RF treatment includes:

Keep our phone number handy in case you have any questions or concerns in the days following your procedure. We are here to help you with anything you need.
