What is the Difference Between Varicose and Spider Veins?

What is the Difference Between Varicose and Spider Veins?

Living with varicose or spider veins can be challenging, especially when you feel self-conscious about their appearance. While both conditions affect how your skin looks, varicose veins can signal a more serious underlying issue.

If you’re ready to address the appearance or symptoms of varicose or spider veins, our Carolina Vein Institute team is here with compassionate treatment options tailored for you.

Dr. Luan Tran and Dr. Rousu An specialize in treating varicose veins. They perform sclerotherapy and other procedures to permanently eliminate unsightly and uncomfortable veins.

Causes of varicose veins

Varicose veins typically develop in the legs when faulty valves in the veins cause blood to back up, making the veins large and twisted.

Chronic venous insufficiency mainly causes varicose veins. Damaged veins block blood from flowing back to the heart.

People who are pregnant, obese, stand or sit for long periods, or who have a family history of varicose veins are more likely to develop them.

Varicose veins can cause uncomfortable symptoms and represent more than a cosmetic concern—they may signal a more serious issue.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins damage tiny blood vessels near the skin’s surface. They usually appear red or blue and sometimes form a tangled web.

Most spider veins are flat and don’t bulge out from the skin. They usually appear on the face, thighs, ankles, legs, and calves. They are usually only cosmetic, though some veins can cause leg heaviness.

Spider veins develop when the walls of small veins are damaged, allowing blood to pool. These veins then dilate and show on the skin’s surface.

Key differences between the two

Varicose and spider veins share some similarities, but they differ in important ways. These key differences determine their treatment.

We help you understand the major differences between these two conditions, including:

Size

Varicose veins are much larger and bulge out, while spider veins are small and closer to the skin’s surface.

Symptoms

Spider veins often don’t cause symptoms and are purely cosmetic. Varicose veins may cause uncomfortable symptoms, including swelling, pain, or discomfort in the legs.

Appearance

Varicose veins are large and purple or blue. Spider veins are much smaller and appear red or blue.

Causes

Prolonged standing or sitting, genetics, and hormone changes contribute to either varicose or spider veins, but varicose veins more often lead to complications.

Treatment

Both spider and varicose veins respond to compression stockings and lifestyle changes. Medical procedures such as radiofrequency ablation and endovenous ablation treat both types, but varicose veins often require more invasive care due to potential complications.
