Is Varithena™ Right for Your Varicose Veins? 4 Things to Know

Living with varicose veins isn’t just a cosmetic issue; they can cause symptoms that interfere with everyday life. Many treatments eliminate varicose veins, including Varithena™.

If you’re tired of living with varicose veins and want a fast and effective treatment, Varithena may be for you. At Carolina Vein Institute, Dr. Luan Tran and Dr. Rousu An are vein specialists who are excited to offer Varithena and other treatments for unsightly varicose veins.

Both practitioners are vein specialists and aesthetic injectors, providing Varithena, endovenous laser ablation, sclerotherapy, and non-surgical vein treatments for problematic veins.

How does Varithena work?

Varithena is a successful and FDA-approved treatment for varicose and spider veins. It’s the brand name for polidocanol injection foam, a sclerosant.

For  varicose veins, we use ultrasound guidance to ensure we’re in the diseased vein. We then inject the sclerosing foam, which goes into the vein and causes it to collapse.

When the vein collapses, blood reroutes to healthier veins, improving symptoms and blood flow.

Varithena is very successful for several reasons, one of which is its oxygen and carbon dioxide content. These ingredients keep it stable longer, allowing it to more effectively eliminate the problem vein.

Four important facts about Varithena

If you’re considering varicose vein treatment, Varithena is a great option, but you should know all of the facts. Below are four important things to consider when thinking of varithena as a treatment option:

1. It’s highly successful

A major benefit of Varithena is its high success rate. Most people only need one treatment, even for very large varicose veins, making it a great option for our patients.

One of the reasons it’s so successful is that it’s more stable than other sclerosing agents, allowing it to work longer and better than the competition.

2. Offers symptom relief

Varicose veins cause symptoms such as discomfort, itching, and heaviness in the legs. If you’re living with uncomfortable symptoms related to varicose veins, Varithena is a great option to eliminate them.

3. It’s minimally invasive

Another important fact about Varithena is that it’s minimally invasive. Most people require only about two needle sticks per treatment, reducing the risk of complications or infection.

4. The side effects are mild, if they even occur

Like any other treatment, Varithena does have some common side effects that aren’t harmful. For instance, you may experience injection site bruising, mild swelling, and discomfort at the injection site.

Is Varithena right for me?

If you have problematic varicose veins, Varithena is a great option – but it’s not for everyone. It’s essential to understand everything you can about your options to choose the best for your health and needs.

You may be a good candidate for Varithena if you have visible varicose veins with systemic symptoms. We perform a medical evaluation and a venous ultrasound to ensure you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

However, if you have an allergy to the main ingredient, have just had major surgery, or have reduced mobility, it’s best to discuss the procedure with us first. You may also not be a candidate if you have a history of blood clots or are pregnant.

We invite you to connect with us at one of our North Carolina offices or visit our website to schedule your consultation and begin your journey toward healthier, more comfortable legs.
